after reading the entire twilight series, watching the movie repeatedly, crying because the whole story is over, crying because the next movie isn't released until november, crying because i can never have edward cullen, where was i? oh. yes. so.

i decided to make the big decision, and READ OTHER BOOKS.

this was a hard step to take my friends, but i did it. i read a book. a new book. that doesn't have edward cullen in it.

its called "people are unappealing - even me" by sara barron.

coupla things.

1. this broad is funny. like, funnier than me. is it possible? apparently. do i hate her for this? lil bit. will i forgive her? yes.

2. i am not done with this book. i am almost done with this book, but am now taking things slow with sara because i respect her and quite honestly i am dreading the inevitable withdrawal i will experience. similar to the one i had re: edward (see above).

3. i was thinking about how much sara and i would get along and facebooked her. she added me as a friend and now i feel like we're tight. i haven't said anything to her yet, but i can tell, she just gets me.

4. today, while i was making breakfast, i thought about how ironic her book title (people are unappealing, even me) is. you know, what with the facebook stalking and all that i did.

here! take it!

and now... i shall read one more page. just one. savor.

check out this rad clutch i bought from Miss Ruby Sue on Etsy. Her stuff is adorable, i can't wait to get this bad boy in the mail.

this is one of those clutches that serves multiple purposes.

1. its a little old lady-ish. therefore i can smack people upside the head that may or may not need it.

2. its also "i'm so vintage and fresh"-ish so i can toss it about nonchalantly to-and-fro while other people glare at me with envy from afar.

i've been back in massachusetts for like EVER and i'm finally home and in decorate mode. my new spanish style house is absolutely adorable, but my white walls have finally drained the life out of me.

its been tough trying to figure out colors for my walls that will make me happy and keep with the character of the house. i've always been SO afraid of bright intense color, i love it every time i see it but i worry that it will vomit if i have to look at it every day. last year i painted my kitchen this bright green, and i think everyone else secretly cringed, but i LOVED it. here's a swatch:

every morning i walked into a bright happy green kitchen that made me want to cook breakfast, make coffee, read my magazines, and listen to music. and that's what i did, religiously.

so after getting this month's issue of domino (what would i do without you dommy), i found EXACTLY what i've been looking for. page 99, titled "exotic bohemian". here is a really bad cell phone pic, it does the colors no justice:

all within 10 minutes:

i had to get my smog check test thing today. so at the station, some sweet little old lady at the desk takes my information, gives me a jolly rancher, tells me a cute little story, takes my boyfriend's credit card and swipes it. then she asks me for my ID. i tell her "oh i'm sorry, thats my boyfriend's card - if you want to do it as debit i can enter a pin so you know its legit".

this does not work. instead, she stands up, waves the card in the air and informs me that i am breaking the law by using another person's credit card. she should take it and cut it in half because that's what the bank would want her to do. i tell her "ma'am, you can't do that, its illegal to take my card unless the bank tells you to because its has been reported stolen". this angers her even more and she tells me i am a little brat, i am a know-it-all, i am breaking the law, and she's keeping my card. i tell her again, she has no right to do that, and instead of getting upset, i can go to the atm and pay with cash instead. she throws the card at me and tells me it's too late, but to leave immediately or she will call the police. all of this happens in front of about 20 people that now have saucer eyes and jaws on the floor. it probably didn't help that i was laughing the whole time, but come on. an 80 year old lady yelling at me is just funny. time to drive across the street to the dmv.

oh boy. it seems i have accidentally stolen some guys parking spot that he had been waiting for, i promise i had no idea he "claimed" it, since he was hidden behind another car at a 90 degree angle, so i slipped right in and there he was in my rear view, his face a bright shade of red. i kind of felt bad, but not really because i was certain that i had been searching for a spot longer than he had been. anyways, instead of driving off in a fit of anger, he puts his car in park and rolls down his window and hangs out of it waiting for me to get out of my car so he can yell at me. i pretend not to notice and decide to make a phone call - that will really piss him off. after about two minutes, he drives off.

i turn off my car and grab my bag and hear a very alarming "CLUNK" to my right. apparently a young woman getting out of her minivan has misjudged the space between our vehicles and thrust her door full force into the side of my car. i don't even think i would have really cared, but human nature and dane cook are right, the first thing out of my mouth is "HELLOOO!".

do you know what she does? she throws her arms in the air and yells "WHAT!? i didn't MEAN to do it! bitch." and storms away.

what. the heck. was all of that nonsense.

its funny. when i was a kid, i ate yogurt with cheerios about 10 times a day. now as an adult, i eat yogurt with granola about 10 times a day. addicted.

so yoplait light has these great new flavors that are sooooo good, i feel like i'm eating dessert everytime i grab one.

so i visit the website (it could use some work) and find that they have yoplait recipes! yessss. smoothies, desserts, and even dinner.

and since we're on the subject of healthy stuff, i finally gave in and tried some silk soy milk.

look, i had soy milk years ago and it tasted just like....soy. it was like someone put a bunch of soybeans in a blender and handed it to me. i couldn't handle it. but i saw this commercial for chocolate soy milk and my mouth was watering. i picked up a carton of silk chocolate soy milk yesterday and it's almost gone. did you know that it has the same nutritional value as regular milk, and then some? soy consumption can decrease the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and some cancers. its way better than milk, and now i don't feel like i'm sucking off the cow's teat. (i just wanted to say teat)

speaking of halloween, i was looking for some fun cupcake ideas and ran into this blog, which is incredibly popular with the baking crews but new to me!

even though i have been obsessed with cooking in recent years, i was never really into baking (why is beyond me, i have a sweet tooth like no other). but recently i made this apple crisp that was to die for, and since then i actually went out and bought baking powder!! i don't think i have ever owned a little can of baking powder, this is very exciting for me. not to say i hadn't made cookies/cakes before, but not from scratch, eek!

so anyway, after searching for halloween cupcake recipes, i found bakerella and my jaw dropped (and then my mouth watered) when i saw these pictures. beautiful work and soooo much inspiration.

whenever i'm designing something, i am guaranteed to hit a brick wall. this is when i wonder if i am on the right track, or need to select all, delete, and start over. but (usually) before that, i hit up a few sites that give me instant inspiration. this is one of them.

what is anything.com randomly puts together two separate user submitted pictures and quotes. and for some reason, they almost always make sense.

kind of reminds me of 3191 a year of evenings.

(i have been following these two for awhile. they live 3191 miles apart, one in portland oregon, the other in portland maine. they put up a picture every evening without planning the shot together, and they are eerily similar most of the time.)

Living in San Deegy sans bike is a SIN.

So after ohhhhh 5 years of trying to decide which kind of bike I wanted (do i want a beach cruiser? i DID live on the beach... or a roadbike, my favorite type of bike but is it practical?.... a hybrid? perfect for getting around but not so good off road... orrrrr mountain. i DO have a huge canyon in my back yard with trails galore).

Mountain it is. Look at this thing. I was seriously drooling in the (trek plug) bike shop. The color is so intense it hurts my eyeballs.

we just had a 5.8 earthquake.

i have been living in california for 5 years and have only felt one and it was when i was driving. i feel like i have been ripped off in this department.

I have been eyeing this Sun Jar featured on Charles & Marie for ages. Some solar panel technology paired with a rechargeable battery, this little jar needs a day in the sun and lights up your patio all night. It also has a buddy, the Moon Jar. And whats even more exciting is they're both available (for around 40 smackers) at my favorite store: Target.

Look. I freakin' love Project Runway. It's def my favorite and I have watched every season religiously.

Then I stumbled upon Fafarazzi.com. A celebrity site where you can pick a fantasy football-like team, and win points based on how often your chosen celebrities are in the tabloids.

But what's even better? There's a reality show section, and guess what show is on there!

Project Runway Season 5 starts tonight, Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Bravo! and you bet I'll be planted on the couch, laptop next to me, glass of wine, piece of paper and pen/checklist in hand.

So now that I'm done with school I have been brainstorming. How can I make a little money on the side while I start my photog business? I want to use my design/packaging skillz but want to start off small, maybe a etsy biz? So I come up with this genius idea: Mandles. Candles for men. With smells like bacon, BBQ, leather, metal. I run this idea by a couple peeps and everyone is like hell yeah do it thats awesome carly good idea you rule.

Sigh. It's about that time to sign up for being earth-friendly.

I recently won a scholarship to the Seeds of Change Y Conference in San Diego, which took place this past weekend.

The whole conference was dedicated to Green Design. Unfortunately, very frequently I heard the phrase "I don't have any answers yet" - which is discouraging but at least it's a hot topic in the design industry. My concern: this green thing is JUST a trend. I'm afraid that in about 4-5 years, u.s. americans (such as) are going to be more concerned with AIDS in Africa, finding a cure for cancer, or immigration issues.

And as much as we can try to take 5 minute showers, buy products with minimal/biodegradable packaging, shut our lights off for an hour, carpool, recycle, stop buying bottled water, say no to paper or plastic, blah, blah, and blah-- only an estimated 5% of us are actually trying. The only way the other 95% of u.s.americans (such as) are going to participate is if they HAVE to.

(because putting a 10 cans in a blue bin and taking 5 minutes off my shower doesn't feel like I'm doing much when I see 3742938 cans in the grey bin and when I hear my neighbor showering for 30 minutes.)

Now. I am not into the whole socialist thing. But what about a gallon-per-person allotment per household, and when exceeded, overage charges are issued. Maybe not a plastic shopping bag ban like San Francisco, but more incentives for business owners to use recycled/able bags instead. Carpoolers get toll fees waived. More vouchers from our cities to encourage ownership of energy efficient appliances. The city of San Diego, for example, offers tips on water conservation and all sorts of vouchers for toilets and washing machines.

I'm excited to see what all the candidates have COMMITTED to in a couple months. But giving ourselves the 2050 deadline isn't realistic. After listening to Robin Chase, the founder and former CEO of zipcar and current founder/CEO of GoLoco, i learned we have to start making drastic changes in how we get from point A to B by the year 2018. And all this talk about gas prices? That's only 8% of your spendings annually when it comes to car ownership. Crazy huh. Did you know each mile you drive contributes ONE POUND of C02 into the atmosphere? we SUCK!

I'm going to go eat an organic banana.

So obvi i haven't posted anything in 47937 days, but today i had some potato chips that i love and wanted to write about them.

...but i have been one-upped...

Something far more exciting, ExpoTelevision... a generic YouTube... has videos of people critiquing food. Today's time killer = found.

My little chatty friend here did NOT like the chips. But i did.

linen pants.

i currently own three pair. brown, white, and navy. i wear them with a tee to be caj. or you can throw some heels on and look wicked fancy. and perfect to wear under a cotton dress with flips. they're like jeans, but more comfortable.

this is a good thing that they're back in style, because i was just starting to wear boy clothes.

just a couple of quick recipes that i LOVE. mostly because they take about 10 minutes, but also because they're wicked good to eat.

1) crepes.

2 eggs
1 cup flour
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup H2O
2 tbsp melted butter
pinch of salt

mix the shit together and pour it on a frying pan. take your spatch and flatten the crap out of them. flip after a minute, and you're done.
now's the good part. add either raspberry preserves or NUTELLA in a line down the center and roll up and enjoy the deliciousness in your mouth.

2) mexican delightful party pizza

6 tortillas
cup of tomato sauce, jar of medium salsa (the smaller jar)
can of corn (small can, no salt added)
can of black beans (also no salt bitches)
monterey jack shredded cheese
sour cream (smallest container)
1-2 tbsp taco seasoning (optionial)

preheat oven to 500. mix your tomato sauce and salsa in one bowl. throw your beans and corn in a strainer, and wash in cold water for a minute, and put in another bowl. spray a cookie sheet with non stick stuff (i just throw aluminum foil on it because i like not cleaning). place your first layer of tortilla and spread red sauce, follwed by bean and corn mixture, followed by cheese, then the tortilla, sauce, beans/corn, cheese, tortilla. put in the oven for 10-12 minutes. while waiting, finish your cheese, its addictive. oh also while waiting, take your sour cream and taco seasoning and mix for your dip. look, this honestly takes me 15 minutes to make and is the best thing ever. i can almost convince people that i have cooking skills when i make it.

(friend is having baby shower in a couple weeks and i will not buy bottles and cute outfits)

which makes me think about parenting. is it selfish to try to make your baby look cool? like, there's tons of "hipster" clothing now, skulls and guitars.... not very baby-like if you ask me. but i don't know if i could resist, if i have a boy, he might be wearing eyeliner and have a couple tats by the time he starts walking.

So today was my last day of school. Welcomed after spending 5 hours at kinko's until the wee hours of the morning, only to come home and cram for the final. My project was to design a "graphic history journal", starting with the invention of writing and ending with the digital revolution. Not only was it actually interesting, but i learned you can also bind something at kinkos for only a few dollars.

so my summer project (ok, ONE of my summer projects) is to create a REAL journal out of all the clippings, magazine pages, business cards, i have stuffed in an accordian folder. i am not a scrapbooker, and i frown upon the cult, but i suppose it will be similar to one. only mine will actually be functional, containing things that will help me when i'm in a design rut. i'm excited to get it started, but also aware that i might not ever do it.

UPDATE: i never did it.

other summer projects: getting my website up and running, making my photography portfolio, finding a new apartment, setting up a darkroom in spare bedroom in new apartment, and more stuff but i forget.
